How Long Does Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Take in Texas?

Jeremy March 31, 2026 0

One of the most common questions I hear is: how long is this going to take? The answer for Chapter 7 is one of the most encouraging things I get to tell people — it is faster than almost everyone expects.

The Typical Chapter 7 Timeline

From filing to discharge, a standard Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Texas takes approximately 90 to 120 days — roughly three to four months. For most people, the actual experience involves very little activity after the initial filing.

Step by Step

Before filing: We gather documents, run the means test, complete required credit counseling, and prepare your petition. This typically takes one to two weeks, though we can move faster if your situation is urgent.

Filing day: The moment the case is filed, the automatic stay goes into effect. Collection calls stop. Garnishments stop. Foreclosure proceedings pause.

The 341 Meeting: Approximately 20 to 40 days after filing, you attend a short meeting with the bankruptcy trustee. It is not a court hearing — it typically lasts less than ten minutes, and I will be with you the entire time.

60-day objection period: After the 341 meeting, creditors have 60 days to object. In the vast majority of straightforward cases, no objections are filed.

Discharge: Once the objection period closes, the court enters your discharge order. Your debts are legally eliminated.
